My Jehovah-Jireh
My family has often needed money for important expenses, but God has always taken care of us. The same is true for our church’s financial needs.
A few Sabbaths ago, I told the story of how God provided for our church’s $20,000 insurance premium. A couple from our church gave me a check for just over $20,000, right when we needed it to get the discount. When it was time to replace our $10,000 water heater, several members gave generously, and one person contributed $4,000.
Some of you quietly meet specific needs in our church, like bringing paper towels, bathroom tissue, air fresheners, or covering the monthly Bioswell grass-cutting. There are many more examples, and much of it happens in ways I can’t even keep track of. This is all in addition to your tithe and San Diego Fil-Am plan giving. God sees everything, and He provides.
God keeps His promises and has never let us down, even when things seem impossible. Abraham’s story in Genesis 22 shows this. It didn’t make sense to Abraham that the God who promised him many descendants would ask him to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice, which was a common way to honor a god in his culture.
Even so, Abraham trusted God. “After going over and over the promise God had made to him that he would have descendants, Abraham had come to the point where he had total confidence that God would solve the problem by raising Isaac from the dead” (Genesis 22:15b The Clear Word, cf. Hebrews 11:17–19). Abraham didn’t understand everything, but he trusted God completely.
As we head into 2026, things may change. The future might feel uncertain, and we may face real challenges without clear answers. Even so, we serve the same God. He is our Jehovah-Jireh, “the LORD who Sees and Provides.” That is the name Abraham gave to the place where God provided a ram instead of Isaac.
So when we feel overwhelmed by what’s ahead, let’s remember that the God we worship and serve is still Jehovah-Jireh. Let’s trust Him just as Abraham did.
